Kiwi Developers vs. Ludum Dare #33: You Are The Monster

Ludum Dare‘s 33rd jam occurred last weekend from August 21st to 24th, attracting developers from all over the world to create over 2,700 to the set theme. With the prompt ‘You Are The Monster’, a myriad of different games were developed, from monster make-up simulators to Godzilla destroying downtown Tokyo – and Kiwi developers weren’t one to shy away from this interesting challenge. The following are some of the entries from local developers, created in just 48 to 72 hours.

Omnom Children by Farah Khalaf, Sam Kim & Shelley Lowe

Omnom Children’s description is short and to the point: ‘there are innocent plant and shroom children waiting to be eaten. You have until the sun goes down to eat as many as possible.’ Designed in a gorgeous, cutesy style with a questionably dark underlying message, Omnom Children is worth a play and is sure to entertain with the embedded SFX.

Death Mettle by Lianne Booton

deathmettle

Death Mettle is a game that pulls no punches, putting you in control of Death himself to commit mass genocide of the innocent and “blow shit up”.  Murder who you think should be murdered, and watch your cute little humans grow up and gain traits. This entry has some seriously amazing art and a huge helping of dark humour.

That Cow Game by nomand

That Cow Game

That Cow Game is a really neat exploration of factory farming through role reversal – you’ve got to play it to see it. No spoilers.

Hecatomb by Fiero Interactive

Hecatomb

In Hecatomb, an entry by Wellington’s Fiero Interactive, you have been summoned to reconsecrate the Sacrificial Temple. The people gathered within are honoured to die in the service of the gods, so you should take as many (lives) as you can. Included within: combos! Screams! ‘Action-packed action’!

For over 2,700 more game entries and more information about Ludum Dare, head on over to the jam’s website.
